What is a good first time bird?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 8 Comments

I want to get a bird. I’ve never had one before. I took care of a green cheek conure and a couple of cockateils for a family friend a few years ago. I live in a house right now, but may be moving into an apartment in a few years, so it should be on the more quiet side, as far as a bird goes that is. I don’t want finches, I want a bird I can interact with. I have dogs and cats as well.

I live in New England and usually have birds at feeders all year. Suddenly, there are none. Why?

I have three feeders. One with mixed feed for all. One suet for woodpeckers (they are coming), and one with thistle for the smaller birds (usually, there is a feeding frenzy here).

What cleaning product should be used to clean up bird droppings?

I have 25 finches in one large cage. I moved them recently to a different part of the house. And I noticed the wall that was behind the cage is now covered in bird droppings & stuck on seeds. What should I clean that with without thinning the paint behind it?
Thanks I will try the water soaked paper towel idea.

What other type of bird can CANARIES be housed with?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 5 Comments

I have a male and female canary right now in a cage, I recently bought a 8ft tall by 8 ft wide aviary to house them in and give them way more room to fly in. The aviary is too big to house just 2 canaries. I would like to get some other birds to put in with my canaries. Will other types of finches work, I would like to get a pair of doves, What do you think? Also the aviary is inside the house. Thanxs

How do I keep Pigeons away from my bird feeder?

How do I keep Pigeons away from my bird feeder?

I live in New York City and recently bought a hanging bird feeder for my very small front yard. It was really nice at first, finches and other birds were coming to eat and it was peaceful to hear them chirping outside. That is until the pigeons figured out there was free food. Now all I hear is them crashing into the feeder to make the food fall onto the ground so they can eat it. Besides the noise I also now have pigeon poop all over my gate. And all the “pretty” birds have gone away. Anyone have suggestions as to how I can keep my feeder and keep the pigeons away? Thanks

Young House Finch

Young House Finch outside of my apartment on July 17, 2009. This young bird is perched below a thistle feeder while its father eats the seeds. Shortly after this video ended, the youngster flew after his father, chasing him from the feeder. He continued to chase his father, not eating any of the seeds. I’ve been watching these finches for the past 3 weeks.
