With the correct finch bird feeder and the correct bird food you will be able to see a wide variety of finches in your garden.  I personally like feeding them becuase they are fun to watch and have a very nice singing voice.

There are many varieties of finch, that include:- house finches, goldfinches, Cassin’s finches and purple finches.  And all of them can be attracted to your garden feeder.  Many of these can be seen year-round as some species do not migrate.  This, of course, will depend on how far north you live.

All of these finches will eat a wide range of feed such as nyjer and thistle, millet and sunflower seed.  They will also eat fruit, breadcrumbs and even crushed eggshells.  If is also recommended that you include just a touch of grit in with the food as this helps their digestive system process the food – just as in the same way you see pidgeons pick up grit and gravel from the side of the road.

Because of the number of birds that can be attracted by feeding, I have multiple feeding platforms setup so there is not too much competition.

There are many types of finch bird feeder which are cheap to purchase such as tube feeders, mesh feeders, sacks and stockings.  All work very well and are simple to use.

Most finches will not nest in a finch bird house but will use it temporarily.  The exception to this is the Rosy finch that will sometimes nest in a man made box – but that is definately not the rule.

The will nest in the surrounding trees and stay away, as much as possible, from predators such as cats.  They do nest in rather low – about 10 feet above ground – so predators are a problem.

After courship (where the male feeds the female and she picks him on this ability) the females build the nest and the male takes responsibility for protecting the female – which he focuses on rather than protecting his territory.  This is a rather atypical behaviour for birds (and rather nice).  She will lay around 4-6 eggs which take only 2 weeks to hatch.  During this time, the male finch will feed the female who will, inturn, feed the hatchlings.

Finches are a great bird to feed.  Just pick the right finch bird feeder and the right type of feed and you will see lots of activity in your garden which will give you hours of pleasure.

I personally prefer to use black-oil sunflower seed as the choice of feed because of the nutrients it contains – and the fact that the birds love it.  But, to give some variety, I change the types of feed every month or so.  I also take any leftover bread I have and make breadcrumbs out of it.

What kind of feeder and seed should i use? I’m building a birdhouse next week to place out there too. In my yard right so far ive seen robins, mourning doves, chickadees and crows, etc with blue jays and cardinals during the winter. i also have goldfinches and hummingbirds during the summer but i’m going to wait to get them feeders because its starting to get cold and im sure they’ve already began to migrate south.
I only have one feeder out right now, but the seed my dad bought is really cheap and generic and i want to replace it with something else that will attract more birds.

The Gouldian Finch is native of northern Australia. The Gouldian Finch presents the most spectacular coloring of the family of Australian Finches. Birds with normal color have shades of color from bright green in the back, yellow belly, the chest and purple to red, black, orange head. There are several mutations and various combinations. This video was started after the squirrel had already been spinning for a while. Most squirrels “spin-off” right away but this one was determined to hang on! It finally took a bang on the window to convince him to jump off. After landing he laid spread out on the ground until he finally regained his balance. Hilarious!
