How do i attract wild birds to my yard?

October 26, 2011 Finch Bird Feeder

What kind of feeder and seed should i use? I’m building a birdhouse next week to place out there too. In my yard right so far ive seen robins, mourning doves, chickadees and crows, etc with blue jays and cardinals during the winter. i also have goldfinches and hummingbirds during the summer but i’m going to wait to get them feeders because its starting to get cold and im sure they’ve already began to migrate south.

Your feeder type and the type of food you offer should be geared towards the birds you see in your yard. For example, jays like suet and peanuts, while cardinals really like black-oil sunflower seeds, etc. In the spring you can add a hummingbird feeder. You will not get any birds nesting in your birdhouse until next spring. Chickadees are cavity nesters so might use it when the time comes. You can place it now or in a few more months to let the birds get used to it’s location, but just make sure you don’t end up with a wasp or bee hive in it before then. That is why you might wait until closer to spring to place it. Occasionally a bird will use a birdhouse as a roosting spot to sleep in, but most will use it to nest in.
