What did you see from your kitchen window this morning before going to work.?

I watched the Goldfinches, Greenfinches and sparrows on the bird feeders. Then along came the Squirrel for his peanuts and hazel nuts we had put out for him. I actually managed to film him eating the nuts. Made my day tl watch the wild life with no cares except to find breakfast.

I'm trying to find a species name of bird I recently found in my back yard?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 6 Comments

I recently found a species of small birds nesting in the backyard of my house. They kind of chirp like finches & whistle as imo saying "Thank You/Uh Oh" (if that makes sense).

Like I said they are small, about the size of a canary & have black head & wings with the body color of white/grey. I’m currently caring for a baby that’s out of the nest (& won’t go back in, lol) & I don’t want to leave him/her out there with a chance of ugly alley cats might find him.

I would really appreciate any information on this species as I want to find out more about these birds & their behaviors. Hope to hear from anyone, Thanks in Advance.
It is a Chickadee & it actually carved (nicely like a carpenter) itself a nest inside my tree. Unfortunately there isn’t a place I could leave the baby (fully feathered btw) where I would feel it is safe. I’ve seen many cats around the alley/neighbors yard and can’t sleep knowing something might happen to the little bird.

What I do is feed it formula as much as it wants (I don’t overfeed), then I put it in a cage & hang it near the nest where the parents often get near & in the cage and give it to eat as well.

I don’t live in a suburb, I live near a city and I don’t believe that there is a place (close/near) to take the bird. I had to drive several miles away to take my budgie to an avian vet & not a good one to boot.

I have had babies with budgies and I currently have around 17 birds, majority babies from a breeding couple, so I’d like to think I know something about caring for them.

I appreciate your response’s. Thanks.

What cleaning product should be used to clean up bird droppings?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

I have 25 finches in one large cage. I moved them recently to a different part of the house. And I noticed the wall that was behind the cage is now covered in bird droppings & stuck on seeds. What should I clean that with without thinning the paint behind it?
Thanks I will try the water soaked paper towel idea.

ALRIGHT! I'm SICK of them! Now how….?

How do I get rid of flocks of black birds?

I have two poles with a total of 8 feeders on them. For the first few weeks of May & June, I had cardinals, gold finches, Downy woodpeckers, purple house finches, nuthatches and chickadees.

But all of a sudden the grackles and starlings took over and all I ever see are occasional blue jays who aren’t afraid of the "black plague."

Is there a way to selectively get rid of certain birds? I use a variety of feed including safflower. Peanuts and sunflower seeds are gone in one day. Shiny, sparkling things up in the trees have no effect. I don’t want to put up a fake owl as I will get NO birds!

So, now what?

This is getting expensive!
I live in a residential neighborhood so I don’t dare use all the fire power suggested.
MsLucy!

I didn’t invite the black birds. Until this year, after 20 or so years of feeders, all the birds were the "nice" variety. Many colors, songs, etc. Hummingbirds too.

I think the black birds weasled their way in here.

My idea was that maybe someone knew of seed combination that they couldn’t stand.
Don’t get so bent out of shape!

Thistle for North Carolina Birds???

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

We recently added a thistle feeder to our other feeder, but after a couple of weeks no birds have touched it. With our other feeders, the birds started feeding within a few days.

I’m wondering if the problem is the thistle seed we filled the new one with. The ad suggests this.

Does anyone have any experience w/thistle seed for N.C. birds?

Thanks for any advice!

Alan

Does anyone know what this bird is? ( Ohio)?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

I have had a visitor to my feeder…always in twos, and up to four birds. They are very small but a bit bigger than an American finch.
They have grey bodies and sunset orange chests. Very lovely birds. Bills look like they are insect eaters. ( I am not an expert on birds…forgive my lack of correct terminology!)
I think they may be some type of flycatcher…maybe redstarts.
They are NOT American Redstarts.
This photo is similar to what they look like… http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ruchet.com/oiseaux/rougequeue-a-front-blanc/DSC_9586.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.ruchet.com/index.php%3Fp%3Drougequeue-a-front-blanc%26lang%3Dde&h=499&w=741&sz=78&hl=en&start=14&sig2=x9F6pvS_4wEaLR4YMoGUpg&um=1&tbnid=b5T6OwVLaYv4bM:&tbnh=95&tbnw=141&ei=45OcR53IFYe0evqasM0G&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcommon%2Bredstart%2B%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dcom.mozilla.campus:en-US:official%26sa%3DG
They look like Common Redstarts but …I don’t think those birds are in Ohio.
Thanks!

how long after a house finches nestlings hatch, will the male/female sleep in the nest at night with the baby?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 1 Comment

i have a new nest under my patio awening, and the house finches already laid their eggs. i know for a fact that they’ve already hatched approximately 2 weeks ago. Since the nest was completed , either the male/female house finch would sleep in the nest every night since it was completed. Now 2 wks later, the nestlings are approximately 2 wks old. I went outside to check the nest in my patio, and neither male/female house finch is in the nest tonight !!!
So what i’m asking now and need to know, is this normal now since the nestlings are approx 2 wks old, will the male/female parent now leave the young nestlings alone at night?
Will the baby house finches be ok at night alone?
Please help me out here b/cuz i’m so worried about the young nestlings. i’m learing about these beautiful birds & their way of life.

What kind of bird?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I see two small birds at my feeder; they both look alike; red breast & under belly; dark blue head; wings dark blue/black on top of the wings are a light patch of grey one on each wing. Very beautiful; the colors are vibrant.

They look like finches but I cannot find any photos online to identify; when I first saw the first one he was with two other finches that looked like a light light green.
