What kind of bird? Normal to re-use an "old" nest?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 3 Comments

we have a bird that built a nest on the "roof" of our bedroom window. i am trying to figure out what kind of bird that it might be. i did some research and i believe that it might be a house finch. the babies have now left the nest. i noticed yesterday that ANOTHER bird has now made a nest in the old one. is this a normal thing? or could it be the same female bird laying more eggs? my daughter (4yrs) loves checking in on the birds. i wanted to make sure that this wont make the mother bird leave the eggs. we stay at a fair distance away from the window. she is excited the fact that we have more baby birds to watch. i know these are silly question but i do not know anything about birds. thanks for all the answers in advance!

heres a picture of the new bird

My Zebra Finch has two eggs. What do I do?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

On wednesday night I saw my a egg in my zebra finchs nest and thursday when I came back from college I saw another egg. I called the vet and they said the eggs will hatch in about 20 days.

Do I need to do anything or give them extra supplements. Right now they get: Millets, finch bird food mixed with molting and conditioning seed supplement, cuttle bone and multi drops added to their water that has vitamins:A, D3, B6, niacin, d-pantothenic, choline, thiamine, and riboflavin.

And their nest is a wicker nest I got from the pet store and it has dried grass from the store.
I also stuck a small bundle of grass on the side of the cage in case they decided they want more to keep their nest warmer

So if any1 knows of something I should do different and also what I should give me finchs once the eggs hatch please tell me.
I dont need idiotic answers like the one who said "eat on of them"

    house finch question?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 2 Comments

several weeks ago we found a nest in a hanging basket. after time, there were 6 eggs in the nest. A little later they started hatching 2 died, so there were a total of 4 babies. While they were in the nest we kept taking it down to water the plant every other day (the mother bird was fine with this). Any way, today we took down the plant to water it and one of the babies flew off. Once it was set down 3 others flew off on to the grass. We kept watching them and with observation, have determined that they are not able to fly high enough to reach the hanging basket, where their nest is. My question…. should we keep the hanging basket where it is supposed to be or leave it on the ground so that the little ones can make it back to the nest?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Get a wild bird to lay eggs in my birdhouse?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 1 Comment

I made a wooden birdhouse for the enjoyment of watching baby birds grow. I want to know HOW to get wild birds like cardinals and house finches to lay eggs in the bird house. Are they not laying in it because it has human scent on it? I put one of them in a tangled bush where dozens of house finches always stay, I put the other in an easy to get to spot deep in a big pine tree in my backyard. Any suggestions on where to put if that would help with the egg laying?

    House Finch abandoned nest???

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 1 Comment

I had a House Finch make a nest in a Geranium hanging basket on my porch. She laid 6 eggs. We had a bad storm the other night, and I took the basket down because of the high winds, afraid that the eggs would get knocked out. I put it back the next morning, but have not seen the birds since. I have not touched the nest or moved it out of the basket. Has she abandoned her nest?

how long after a house finches nestlings hatch, will the male/female sleep in the nest at night with the baby?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 1 Comment

i have a new nest under my patio awening, and the house finches already laid their eggs. i know for a fact that they’ve already hatched approximately 2 weeks ago. Since the nest was completed , either the male/female house finch would sleep in the nest every night since it was completed. Now 2 wks later, the nestlings are approximately 2 wks old. I went outside to check the nest in my patio, and neither male/female house finch is in the nest tonight !!!
So what i’m asking now and need to know, is this normal now since the nestlings are approx 2 wks old, will the male/female parent now leave the young nestlings alone at night?
Will the baby house finches be ok at night alone?
Please help me out here b/cuz i’m so worried about the young nestlings. i’m learing about these beautiful birds & their way of life.

How to get rid of these birds!!!?!?!?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

In my backyard I have 3 or 4 bird feeders that are meant to be fed to the cardinals, finches, and blue birds. But there are really big crows that come and scare away the little birds and eat all their food. Same with these kind of birds called "starlings", they look like crows but are shiny, they eat all the food too. Also, there’s these "falcon" looking things, they’re huge! They come and catch the little birds, kill and then eat them. I’ve already found 4 dead and partly chewed up and 1 wounded today!
I have a bluebird box near the feeders so the bluebirds lay their eggs there, but Im really afraid the big birds are going to tear it up and kill the babies. What should I do?!?!?!
