What can I do to keep finches from flying into windows?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

We have bird feeders in our yard, and this spring we added finch feeders. I love to watch them, but they’re constantly flying into our windows! We moved the feeders farther from the house but it doesn’t seem to have helped. None have been killed (I haven’t found any on the ground) but it sounds so horrible and painful. Plus, I have the screen out of one window so I can open it to take photos, but now I’m afraid they would fly in the window! Short of removing the feeders, or hanging something in front of the windows, (and blocking the view) does anybody have any suggestions?

Found Baby Bird – what should i do?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 4 Comments

woke up around 6 this morning, went outside to let the dogs out and found a baby house finch curled up on the ground by the dog food. It wouldnt fly away so i couldnt leave it or the dogs would surely get it. So i put it in a pet carrier with seed and water, It has almost full feathers, just alot of baby fuzz. It appears to have a tiny scab on its head, but nothing serious. I can pick him up and he just sits there in my hand but in the cage he just goes to the corner and tucks his head and goes to sleep. My husband thinks we should just put him on the ground in the empty field lot next door, in the shrubs or something, but there’s stray cats and lots of hawks around. Im afraid to keep him from learning to fly or something. If he has most his feathers does this mean he is old enough for the seed too? ANY ADVICE please on what to do with this bird i would greatly appreciate. thanks

I rescued 4 baby house finches from my front porch b/c I hadnt seen the mom around the nest in days….?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 4 Comments

they had a nest on top of my wind chim and the mom had been flying back and forth constantly, then I didnt see her for a couple days and the babys were looking dehydrated its been in the 90′s here, and they wernt making any noise, so I got worried and my mom talked me into saving them so I have 4 baby finches in a bird cage- they have all their feathers and can fly just not well their feathers need to grow out more so they have control of their flight. I took them outside today (put the cage on the porch) while I was watering my flowers, 2 adult finches came down and were looking in the cage and landed on the cage now I am thinking those might be the parents and I have had them for 2 full days I dont know weather I should put the nest back up and put the birds in there or if its too late and I need to keep them I heard it was a myth that the mama bird will reject the babies after human touch but I dont know – and since I pulled the nest down with them – will the parents go back to it

I have found an injured bird, not sure the species.?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

Today I found a bird that I think got hit by a car. It seems to be paralyzed. We’ve put wild bird seed and some water in a bird cage lined with towels. It can fly a few feet if it leaves from your hands, but it can’t fly from the ground. It has trouble landing with it’s bad legs and all.

I’m assuming it’s native to Iowa.. since that’s where I found it. It’s about the size of my hand, long wings, mostly brown. The beak is dark in color and seems long compared to the birds I’m familiar with (robins, yellow finches, cardinals). People keep asking if it’s a dove, but I’m not sure. I can email a picture if anyone thinks they might know.

I’m hoping that if we can figure out what kind it is we can specialize the treatments. Thanks!

Help..I rescued a baby bird…what do I feed it?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 17 Comments

The cat had gotten it…now it’s in a bird cage. It’s survived the night..alert and drinking water from a eye dropper. Thistle is there if it wants it.
Oh..it’s not a real young bird but not quite able to fly. Looks like it needs some tail feathers. Probably why our cat found it. It’s a female House Finch.
We have Lindsey Museum in the next town which has an animal rescue hospital there but their closed on Sundays. What do I feed the little gal until then?
(and yes..I did take her outside hoping maybe the trama was over for her and she could fly away…she just tried to run fluttering her wing, that’s how I know she can’t fly yet! Maybe fell outta a nest..dont know!

Anybody?
And please be serious…no jerk answerers…I love birds!
Thanks

a question about finch birds, you may help me?

Posted by Filed Under Finch Bird House with 2 Comments

I got me a pair of finch birds years ago, finally last year they got 3 babies(all girls )so i was a total of 5 birds in the same cage, the cage was pretty big, so i make sure that they were feeling comfy all the time and with plenty of food, for some reason the ‘mama’ of all the babies hurted her leg and she broke it half way and she became the ‘weakest’ in the cage, the new babies started to attack her as soon as they noticed that she couldn’t walk fine,to the point that i had to buy another cage where the ‘mama’ and the father of all the girls would be leaving, that put an end to all the fights!,but later the 3 birds remaining in the other cage started to fight very heavy, specially against one specially bird, today i found it dead!!— my question is how sociable are this kind of birds?what was causing the new babies to fight to much?i make sure to supply them with plenty of water, food, toys,in a nice part of my house,i can not assume that the cause of the new baby death was old age because she wasn’t even 1 year old!
by the way they are "zebra" finch birds
her leg was amputated by a professional vet,he told us that we did not have any other choice but amputate it,and yes the bird cage is pretty big and i am sure it is plenty of room for them to fly and be living in it.As i said al this problem started as soon as the mother hurted her leg, that’s when the babies got to show the agressivity
